In Mark 12:31, Jesus commands us, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' This directive is powerful and profound. Notice that the command to love our neighbor comes after the directive to love ourselves. It implies that we cannot properly love others if we do not first learn to love ourselves. Loving ourselves is not selfishness; it is a necessary foundation for loving others and fulfilling our purpose in this life. Now, you might be thinking, 'How do I love myself?' In a culture that often tells us we are not enough, it can feel counterintuitive to focus on self-love. But remember, self-love is about recognizing our worth as children of God. Psalm 139:14 reminds us, 'I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.'
